Replacing a UK certificate

If you have lost, damaged or never received your original UK civil registration certificate, you can obtain a certified copy directly from the General Register Office (GRO). We assist clients in locating the correct record and submitting the application accurately to avoid delays — incorrect or incomplete details are the most common cause of a failed search.

  • Available for: birth, death, marriage, adoption and civil partnership certificates registered in England and Wales
  • The GRO holds records from 1 July 1837
  • We handle the search, application and correspondence with the GRO on your behalf

GRO fees and timescales

  • Standard service: £12.50 per certificate (dispatched approximately 4 working days after application, where a GRO index reference is provided)
  • Priority service: £38.50 per certificate (faster turnaround)
  • Government certificate fee payable to the GRO in addition to our service fee
For certificates registered in Scotland, records are held by National Records of Scotland; for Northern Ireland, by the General Register Office for Northern Ireland (GRONI). We can advise on the correct route where a record falls outside England and Wales.

Using the certificate abroad

A GRO-issued certificate can be apostilled by the FCDO for use in Hague Convention member states, or put through the full embassy legalisation chain for non-Hague countries. We can combine your replacement certificate with either service so it arrives ready to use.

Send us the names, dates and place of registration and we will locate the record and confirm the fees.
