British Citizenship

British citizenship grants you lifelong permission to reside in the UK, the right to work, study, access public services, apply for a British passport, and vote in UK elections. At Visa Professionals, we guide you through every step of the citizenship application process to maximise your chances of success.

Naturalisation as a British Citizen

Most people apply for British Citizenship through Naturalisation. To qualify, you must normally have lived lawfully in the UK for at least 5 years (3 years if married to or in a civil partnership with a British citizen), held ILR or Settled Status for at least 12 months, met the English language requirement, passed the Life in the UK Test, and demonstrated good character.

Registration as a British Citizen

Some people are entitled to register as British citizens rather than applying for Naturalisation. This includes certain children born overseas to British parents, children who have lived in the UK for 10 years, and those who were previously British nationals. Registration requirements vary significantly by individual circumstances.

Dual British Citizenship

The UK permits dual nationality, meaning you do not have to give up your existing citizenship to become British. However, it is wise to check whether your home country allows dual nationality before applying, as some countries require you to renounce your original citizenship.

The Life in the UK Test

The Life in the UK Test is a mandatory requirement for most applicants aged 18–64. The test costs £50 and assesses your knowledge of British culture, history, values and everyday life. If you have previously passed the test as part of an ILR application, you will not need to retake it for your citizenship application.

The Citizenship Ceremony

If your application is successful, you will be invited to attend a Citizenship Ceremony at your local council. At the ceremony, you will pledge your loyalty to the UK and receive your Certificate of Naturalisation. After this, you can apply for a British passport.

How Long Does It Take?

The Home Office typically takes up to 6 months to decide a Citizenship application, though this can be longer for complex cases. A well-prepared application with all the correct supporting documents can help to avoid unnecessary delays.
