UK Residency & Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)
Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) is a form of permanent residence that allows non-UK nationals to live, work, and study in the UK without any time restrictions. It is often the final step before applying for British Citizenship. Visa Professionals has extensive experience helping clients achieve this important milestone.
ILR After 5 Years
The most common route to settlement, available to holders of Skilled Worker visas, Health & Care Worker visas, Spouse/Partner visas, Global Talent, Innovator Founder and other qualifying visa categories. To qualify, you must have lived continuously and lawfully in the UK for five years, passed the Life in the UK Test, and met the English language requirement. You must not have spent excessive time outside the UK during this period.
10-Year Long Residence ILR
If you have lived lawfully in the UK for 10 consecutive years under any visa category (with limited exceptions), you may qualify for ILR under the Long Residence route. This is particularly useful for those with a varied immigration history who do not qualify under a specific five-year route. Each period of lawful residence is assessed carefully.
7-Year Child Residency (Private Life ILR)
Children who have lived continuously in the UK for at least 7 years may be eligible for ILR under Private Life provisions, where it would be unreasonable to expect them to leave. Parents and siblings of qualifying children may also apply depending on the circumstances of the case.
What Happens After ILR?
Once you hold ILR, you can live and work in the UK without restriction. After holding ILR for 12 months (or immediately in some cases), you may be eligible to apply for British Citizenship by Naturalisation. ILR can be lost if you spend 2 or more consecutive years outside the UK, so it is important to be aware of your travel history.
