UK Partner Visa Routes

If you plan to live with your partner in the UK, there are several visa options available depending on your relationship status and personal circumstances. Whether you are married, engaged, in a civil partnership, or in a long-term relationship, Visa Professionals can guide you through the right route.

Spouse Visa

If you are married to a British citizen or a person with settled status in the UK, the Spouse Visa allows you to enter or remain in the UK. You must prove a genuine relationship, meet the financial requirement (currently £29,000 income threshold), and demonstrate English language ability. This visa typically lasts 2.5 years initially and leads to permanent settlement after five years of continuous residence.

Civil Partner Visa

The Civil Partner Visa is for those in a legally registered civil partnership with a British citizen or settled person. Similar to the Spouse Visa, it requires proof of a genuine relationship, financial independence, and adequate accommodation. It grants an initial stay of 2.5 years with the right to work and study.

UK Fiancé(e) Visa

If you intend to marry or form a civil partnership in the UK, you may apply for a Fiancé(e) Visa or Proposed Civil Partner Visa. These visas are valid for six months and require you to marry or register your partnership within that period. Afterwards, you can switch to a Spouse or Civil Partner Visa to remain in the UK.

Unmarried Partner Visa

If you have been living together with your partner in a relationship akin to marriage or civil partnership for at least two years, you may qualify for an Unmarried Partner Visa. You must provide substantial evidence of your shared life together, financial support, and accommodation.

Key Requirements for All Partner Visas

  • Meet the minimum income threshold (currently £29,000 per year)
  • Pass the ‘Genuine Relationship Test’ with supporting evidence
  • Demonstrate English language ability (IELTS or equivalent)
  • Provide evidence of adequate accommodation
  • Meet the tuberculosis (TB) test requirements if applicable

Processing Times & Costs

A Spouse Visa application typically takes between 2–12 weeks to process. The current application fee is £1,523 for applications made from abroad and £1,033 from within the UK. After 5 years of continuous lawful residence, you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) and subsequently British Citizenship.
