Tier 4 of the Points Based System is the route by which non EEA nationals who wish to study in the UK may apply for a visa. The initial visa for entry to Tier 4 has to be applied for from overseas, unless you are in the UK as a ‘prospective student’.

There are two categories of Tier 4 – Tier 4 (Child), for minors, and Tier 4 (General) for adults.

Before you apply for a Tier 4 visa you will need a Certificate of Acceptance for Studies – a CAS – from a licenced sponsor who is registered with the UK Border Agency, and enough funds to pay for the first year of your course, and to maintain yourself. You will also need to demonstrate that you meet the English language requirements.

You can study for a maximum of three years on courses below degree level under Tier 4 (General). In addition, you can study for a maximum of five years at or above degree level, though this five year limit does not apply if you are studying architecture, law, dentistry, medicine or music.

Students in private colleges are not eligible to work. Students who study in universities or publicly funded further or higher education colleges may study for up to 10 hours per week during term time if they are studying a course below degree level, and 20 hours per week if they are studying at degree level.

Only students who are studying at degree level or above for 12 months or more may bring dependents to the UK; however, if your family are already in the UK as your dependents they can apply for an extension on the same basis at the same time that you apply for an extension of your leave, as long as you are applying to study for a course of at least six months.
